Website Offers Homeowners Chance To Calculate Insurance Premium Discounts

PGT, Florida's leading manufacturer of custom windows, doors and patio rooms, announced another opportunity for Florida homeowners to see first-hand the 'impact' that products such as impact-resistant windows and doors are having; this time in the insurance industry.

Florida Statute 626.0629 requires insurance companies to offer Florida homeowners discounts, credits, or other rate differentials, for construction techniques that reduce damage and loss in windstorms. Florida insurance companies were required to submit filings by March 2003 that provide for these wind mitigation discounts to take effect towards the end of the year.

"Insurance premiums are a concern for nearly every homeowner, especially in the state of Florida," states Cara Dohnalek, senior brand manager for PGT® WinGuard® Impact-Resistant Windows and Doors. "PGT is excited that homeowners now have an opportunity to learn more about the methods and products that potentially lower their insurance premiums."

The Florida Department of Community affairs funded a project to develop a Wind Mitigation Database, and the new site is a result of that project. This website enables homeowners to estimate potential percentage discounts on the wind portion of their total insurance premiums. Depending on where a person lives in Florida, the wind portion is between 15 and 70% of their total premium.

PGT urges homeowners to calculate the percentage of potential cost-savings on insurance when using products such as impact resistant windows and doors as a form of wind, storm or hurricane protection for their home.
