Children's Health Severely Threatened by Lack of InsuranceNearly twenty percent of uninsured Americans - 8.5 million individuals - are children. As many as 2.8 million of those children are uninsured in the state of Florida alone (Kaiser Foundation, 2002). As one of the leading providers of children's health care for Florida, Nemours knows firsthand that poor health outcomes occur when our children go without needed care because they lack health insurance. "The children of this community who have no health care coverage are not strangers to us," said David Bailey, MD, MBA, Vice-President of Patient Operations and Chief Operating Officer of Nemours. "They arrive at our clinics and hospital seeking emergency services for conditions that could have easily been prevented if the child had only had access to primary care that basic health insurance provides." "Adequate future state and federal funding of Medicaid and SCHIP is vital to the health of all our community's children. Any decrease in funding will result in a decrease in the number of insured children and a reduction in services available to those who have coverage," according to Dana Ferrell, Director for Government Relations at Nemours. As the nation observes Cover the Uninsured Week, May 10 - 16, Nemours is calling on the community and its leaders to support the funding of health care coverage for all of our children.
